You’d be forgiven if you thought all diamonds came from somewhere deep underground. But what about diamonds that are grown in a laboratory? There are fewer conversations on this subject because people aren’t entirely sure what’s going on. As with anything, where there are fewer facts, there tends to be more fiction. There are also myths, widely-held beliefs that also happen to be false. We separate fact from fiction.
MYTH #1: Lab-Grown Diamonds Will Never Be “Real” Diamonds
Not true. Lab-grown diamonds are the real deal. They are pure crystallized carbon just like a mined diamond. Equal in every way except, of course, origin. Thierry Silber, Founder of Madestones, Europe’s well-establised laboratory grown diamond distributor, has a helpful analogy. “You can compare it to ice that occurs in nature when the temperature drops below zero, and ice that occurs in our freezer at home. The ice is the same, only the place of origin is different.”
FACT: In July 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) revised its Jewelry Guides and removed the word “natural” from its description of a diamond to include lab-grown diamonds. Following these updated guidelines, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) does not feature “synthetic” inside GIA reports.
